UCI Road World Championships 1948
The 1948 UCI Road World Championships took place on August 22nd, just like ten years ago, in Valkenburg , Netherlands .
Racing action
37 professional drivers took to the start of the 266.8 kilometer long race track, and like ten years ago, the eleven percent incline to the Cauberg became an insurmountable handicap for most active riders . The 1500 meter climb had to be tackled 28 times, 27 drivers got out early. The finish turned into a duel between the Belgian Albéric Schotte and the French Apo Lazarides , which the 28-year-old Scot won with a lead of ten meters. He had an average speed of 35.8 km / h. The third, Lucien Teisseire , also from France, was already almost four minutes behind. The following drivers also crossed the finish line a long way behind , the last one, Huub Syen from the Netherlands, reached the finish line 14 minutes behind.
Among the amateurs, who had to drive 180 kilometers, a Swede won the road world championship for the second time after 1921 ( Gunnar Sköld ) with the 31-year-old Harry Snell . The Swedish champion drove an hourly average of 34.2 kilometers.
German drivers were still excluded from international races, as there was no national association at that time.
