UCI Road World Championships 1991
The 1991 UCI Road World Championships took place in Stuttgart on August 21, 24 and 25 . This road world championship was the seventh to be held in Germany. 53 nations - more than ever before - were at the start, including for the first time an all-German team.
The Italian Gianni Bugno won the professional race from her sprint at the front. He was cheered at the finish by several thousand Italian battle-goers. The best German was Kai Hundertmarck in 5th place. Of 191 starters only 96 made it to the finish line, among those who had given up were Udo Bölts , Olaf Ludwig and Uwe Raab .
The world champion among the amateurs was the Ukrainian Viktor Rschaksinski , who was the last Soviet world champion, because three days after his victory in Stuttgart his homeland - like many other former Soviet republics - declared itself independent. The women's world champion was Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel from the Netherlands , who had decided not to start in the team race for this race.
