On Sunday 35 professional drivers from 17 nations started the 290 kilometer race. On the circuit, 33 laps had to be mastered in rainy weather. In the 33rd lap a top group of five formed, among them the current Tour de France winner Fausto Coppi . After 25 laps, the group consisted of only four drivers who finally decided to win among themselves at the finish. The fastest sprint was 24-year-old Belgian Rik Van Steenbergen , who achieved an hourly average of 38.01 km / h. Of the 35 riders who started, only 22 made it to the finish.
German drivers were not allowed even four years after the end of the Second World War . Although the national association of German Cyclists was re-established the year before, it was not yet a member of the Union Cycliste Internationale, the world cycling association .
