UCI Road World Championships 1961
The UCI Road World Championships 1961 were held in the 2 and 3 September Swiss Bern instead. The route led over an approximately 13-kilometer circuit of the Bremgarten motor racing track in the city of Bern. The professional riders Rik Van Looy from Belgium , the amateurs Jean Jourden from France and the women Yvonne Reynders also from Belgium became new world champions .
Professional racing
The professional drivers had to cover a distance of 285.252 kilometers. The 27-year-old Belgian Rik Van Looy was able to successfully defend his title from 1960. He won the sprint from the 24-man main field despite a multiple broken spoke shortly before the finish line in front of the Italian Nino Defilippis and Raymond Poulidor from France . The drivers in the main field had achieved an hourly average of 36.8 kilometers per hour . The German driver Hennes Junkermann , who was one of the favorites , only came in 10th. Of the nine riders of the Association of German Cyclists who started , only Sigi Renz reached the finish line in 25th place, 19 minutes behind. Out of a total of 71 drivers, only 32 made it to the finish, although the allegedly less selective nature of the route had been criticized in advance. The most successful nation was Belgium, which in addition to the new and old world champion brought another four riders to the finish line, among them Jozef Planckaert in seventh place .
Amateur races
The world championship course for amateur drivers ran over a distance of 181.524 kilometers, for which 14 laps were necessary. 129 drivers from 31 nations took part. At 37.6 km / h, the only 19-year-old Frenchman Jean Jourden became the new amateur world champion from a three-man top group. He defeated his compatriot Henri Belena in a sprint, 22 seconds later the third Frenchman Jacques Gestraud crossed the finish line. In contrast to the previous year, the state amateurs from the Eastern Bloc did not get a chance this time . Of them, the GDR driver and defending champion Bernhard Eckstein came in only 14th as the best player . The other German drivers from East and West had nothing to do with the decision, the best West German amateur was the 20-year-old Hombrucher Winfried Bölke 30th German champion Karl-Heinz Kunde gave up in the second lap after being nine minutes behind. GDR drivers Günter Lörke , Lothar Appler and Hans Scheibner also got off their bikes early.
Women's race
The women had to cover a distance of 61 kilometers in Bern. Yvonne Reynders made the Belgian triumph perfect and, like her compatriot, became world champion in the 1961 cycling season. She relegated defending champion Beryl Burton from Great Britain and Luxembourg Elsy Jacobs to their places. The best German was the GDR starter Elisabeth Kleinhans . As with the professional drivers, Belgium was the most successful country for women, with Reynders and four other drivers making it into the top 12.
