The 84th UCI Road World Championships took place from September 17 to 24, 2017 in Bergen , Norway .

The world championships were made up of a total of twelve competitions, a road race , a team time trial and an individual time trial for men and women as well as a road race and an individual time trial for U23 drivers and juniors.

Organization and course

The idea of bringing the World Championships to Bergen came from three Norwegian cycling enthusiasts while they were sitting together at the kitchen table at home in 2011 - according to reports. The World Championships, the largest international sporting event in Norway since the 1994 Winter Olympics were held in Lillehammer . Around 1150 athletes from around 50 countries were expected. The organizers expected around 500,000 spectators on site.

The team time trials started on the island of Askøy to lead to downtown Bergen. The individual time trials took place in the urban area of Bergen; the men's individual time trial - at 31 kilometers the shortest to date - ended with a mountain finish at the Fløyen vantage point with an incline of 9.1 percent over 3.4 kilometers up to an altitude of 316 meters. It was the first time that the men's individual time trial ended on a mountain at a World Cup. The men's road race started in Øygarden , ran along the coast and included the climb to Salmon Hill below Ulriken , with a 6.4 percent gradient over 1.5 kilometers.

On the morning of the first day of the competition, the Association of German Cyclists announced that the rider John Degenkolb , who had been chosen to be the team's captain, could not compete in the World Cup for health reasons.

The end of the world championships was the men's road race on the last Sunday of the week: the Slovak Peter Sagan won the world champion title for the third time in a row; this hat trick is unique in cycling history. He was after Alfredo Binda , Rik Van Steenbergen , Eddy Merckx and Oscar Freire , who was three times world champion, but the first to achieve this success in three years in a row. Sagan dedicated his victory to his friend Michele Scarponi, who died in a training accident in April, and his wife.

Twelve kilometers from the finish, on the last climb on Salmon Hill , the French Julian Alaphilippe was able to pull away, followed by the French Gianni Moscon . A group of 26 drivers approached four kilometers from the finish. From this group it came to the sprint duel between Sagan, local hero Alexander Kristoff and the Australian Michael Matthews , which Sagan won, unexpectedly for himself, as he later said. Moscon was later disqualified for being pulled by a car over a short distance. Former racing drivers Mario Cipollini and Óscar Freire later pointed out that Sagan's dominant position was also rooted in the fact that there weren't many top drivers at the moment and that the other teams would let him do it.

The most successful national team at these world championships was that of the Netherlands, which dominated the women in particular: Chantal Blaak won the women's elite race, even though she had been involved in a fall during the race in which American rider Megan Guarnier had her jaw broke. Blaak managed to break away from a breakaway group eight kilometers from the finish and win the race by 28 seconds. In the individual time trial , gold and silver went to their compatriots Annemiek van Vleuten and Anna van der Breggen . Both drivers also placed in the top ten in the road race. British racing driver and road world champion of 2011 Mark Cavendish described the women's race, which was marked by many attacks, as "the most exciting of the World Cup". The third gold medal was won by Tom Dumoulin in the individual time trial.

As in the previous year, the Italian team achieved successes particularly with their juniors: Elena Pirrone won road races and individual time trials and took further podium places with Letizia Paternoster and Alessia Vigilia . Antonio Puppio, an Italian, also won silver in the juniors . Overall, the Italian team won the most total with seven medals. Third place in the medal table went to the Danish team, which took home two gold medals in the junior classes : Mikkel Bjerg won the U23 individual time trial, and Julius Johansen , who had recently become vice European time trial champion, won the junior road race.

The team of the Association of German Cyclists had to be content with a silver medal for the U23 rider Lennard Kämna , who was overtaken by the eventual winner, Benoît Cosnefroy , after a courageous breakaway attempt . Kämna was also a member of the Sunweb team , which became world champions in the team time trial . Drivers from Austria and Switzerland could not place on the podium. The Austrian junior Florian Kierner finished sixth in the junior road race. The Swiss Michael Albasini finished seventh in the men's elite road race.

The cost of hosting the World Championships was estimated at 16.6 million euros in advance, but the actual costs were 23.4 million euros. The deficit was caused, among other things, by the unexpected loss of sponsors from the oil and guest industry as well as the fallen rate of the Norwegian currency since the award for mountains and budget preparation, which is why payments to the world association UCI, for example, had increased. The Norwegian Cycling Federation is now in danger of going bankrupt . A crowdfunding campaign raised 3.5 million kroner (€ 375,000) within a few days. Nevertheless, in view of the enormous audience participation, the organizers rate the World Championships as a great success.
