Around Sebnitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Around Sebnitz is a road bike race around the large district town of Sebnitz . The one-day race is held every September.

history

In the GDR , those interested in sports came together to form company sports communities - the "units". Different sports were divided into sections, as was the case in Sebnitz . In October 1953, the cycling section was founded in the Sebnitz BSG unit . In cooperation with the board of the " Einheit Berlin " sports club and the "German Cycling Association" of the DTSB (Deutscher Turn und Sport Bund), regular races should in future represent a major sporting event for the people of Sebnitz and the district town.

On October 7, 1954, the "Around Sebnitz" was held for the first time; Ten laps were driven over a length of 6.5 kilometers. The number of laps changed over the years (in 2010 it was 17). In every lap the drivers have to conquer the short but steep Finkenberg. After the race was canceled in 2013, the 40th edition took place in 2014.

Because of the temporal proximity to the international classic bike around Berlin , there were many top foreign amateurs at the start during the GDR era. For example, the legendary Eddy Merckx won in Sebnitz in 1963 . Since 1995 professionals are also allowed to start; Jens Voigt , Christian Knees and Roger Kluge, for example, have won since then . In 2015 the competition was in category 1.2 of the UCI Europe Tour calendar . In 2018, "Around Sebnitz" was given Bundesliga status in cycling, which means that the cycling race is back to its early past as a top amateur race.
