In 1996 and 1997, Hieckmann was the German cyclo-cross champion in the youth and juniors respectively . At the Junior World Championships in 1997 he won the individual time trial and won the silver medal in the same discipline the following year .

After various successes in international cycling races during his time as a U23 rider, he received a contract with Team Telekom in 2001 , for which he stayed until he switched to Team Gerolsteiner in 2006. During his career with these international cycling teams , he won the Black Forest GP in 2003 and a stage of the Regio Tour in 2006 , which he finished in second place overall. He was also second in the 2004 Tour of Luxembourg , six seconds behind Maxime Monfort . During his career, Hiekmann competed four times in the Vuelta a España and twice in the Giro d'Italia and was able to finish these six Grand Tours five times. His best overall ranking was 49th place at the Giro d'Italia 2002

On February 7, 2008, Torsten Hiekmann announced that he would end his career because he no longer saw any prospects for himself in the situation in cycling at the time. Since then he has been running the “Höhenfitness” studio in Jena , where alpinists and competitive athletes can complete altitude training. As a hobby he continues cycling and plays ice hockey for the "Erfurt Coyotes".
