The mute Shankar ( Shahrukh Khan ) grows up as a servant of the powerful Raja ( Amrish Puri ), who leads a double life: In front of his coal miners he pretends to be the protector of the poor and is worshiped by them as a god, but leads together with his brother Brijwa he is a violent regime and kills every critic.
When he falls in love with the young Gauri ( Madhuri Dixit ), he uses Shankar's photo to win Gauri's favor and allows him to marry her without Gauri's knowledge or consent. When Gauri's brother visits his sister, she pretends to be the perfect world for him. Shankar runs after him and asks him to take Gauri with him. When he returns to the house, he sees Raja Gauri throwing down the stairs. He then wants to leave the house with Gauri and loses his life in the process. Shankar witnesses and escapes into the jungle with Gauri.
But Raja and his bloodhounds are on their heels. Raja manages to get hold of both. Now both are at the mercy of his merciless violence - but this story doesn't end there.
