Louis Verreydt

Louis Verreydt (born November 25, 1950 in Noorderwijk ( Antwerp ), † August 13, 1977 in Herentals ) was a Belgian cyclist and world champion in cycling .

Athletic career

After Verreydt had a number of successes as a junior , he was appointed to the Belgian national team for the first time in 1970. In 1971 he won the amateur edition of the classic Paris – Roubaix , in 1972 he came second. In August 1971 he won the UCI road world championship in team time trial with the Belgian team . Shortly beforehand, the Belgian four-man had won the Olympic prize (a 100-kilometer team time trial) in the GDR. At the end of the season he won the strong race around Sebnitz in the GDR . In 1972 he was second in the Belgian championship and a stage inWinning the Grand Prix Wilhelm Tell in Switzerland . In the 1972 season he switched to the professional driver camp and drove for the Ijsboerke team . His most significant success as a professional was winning the 1974 Dwars door Vlaanderen race . He died in 1977 of a heart attack.
