Georges Chappe

Georges Chappe (born March 5, 1944 in Marseille ) is a former French cyclist and world champion in cycling .

Athletic career

At the beginning of his career he won the hill climb to La Turbie in 1962 in the amateur class . A year later, the biggest success already followed his career, he has been with the French team at the UCI Road World Championships winner in the team time trial . He was also runner-up on the Route de France . In 1964 he won the Tour de la Yonne . At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo , he was classified with the French team as 6th in the team time trial. Then he became a professional . From 1965 to 1972 Chappe was active as a professional driver.

Chappe competed seven times in the Tour de France , and 37th in 1967 was his best result. He won a stage of the Tour de France (1968), twice the Paris – Camembert race (1967 and 1970), the Criterium International (1970), a stage of the Tour of Portugal (1971) and other races. At the Vuelta a España he started three times and was 36 in 1965. In total, he recorded 15 victories as a professional. In 1970 he won the Prestige Pernod , the annual ranking for the best French professional driver.

Chappe published his autobiography in 2019 under the title Quand Georges Chappe s'échappe . In this he considers the world championship title to be more valuable than winning the stage on the tour.
