Tom Cordes
Tom (Thomas Matthijs Adrianus) Cordes (born May 30, 1966 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch cyclist and world champion in cycling .
Athletic career
Cordes first played football at Ajax Amsterdam until he was 14 , then switched to cycling and won his first race as a beginner. Cordes became the road racing junior world champion in 1984 and won bronze in the team time trial with the Dutch team.
As an amateur , Cordes won one stage of the Tour of Poland in 1985 . A year later he won the team time trial with the Dutch national team at the UCI Road World Championships in 1986 . and became national champion in one's pursuit . In 1987 he was third in the national road racing championship . In 1988 he was able to win the Grand Prix François Faber in Luxembourg and was at the start of the Summer Olympics in Seoul , where he was classified 42nd in the individual race and 11th with his team. In May he drove the International Peace Tour for the second time , but retired after a fall (in 1987 he was 18th overall).
After the Olympic Games he became a professional driver in a smaller Dutch team, but later drove in well-known teams such as Buckler, WordPerfect or PDM , and at times also in Spanish teams. In 1990 he won the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and the Vuelta a Murcia , as well as the Trofeo Baracchi together with Rolf Gölz . At the Vuelta a España in 1962 , he was able to win a stage. He competed five times in the Vuelta a España , his best result being 12th in 1991 . At the Giro d'Italia 1996 he retired. Cordes best result in the classics was 23rd place at Paris – Roubaix in 1991 . He drove the Tour de France in 1993 and was classified as 118th.
From 1997 he started again as an amateur. He won several stages of the domestic Olympia's Tour . In 2001 he won the long-distance journey from Groningen to Münster .
