Wassili Iwanowitsch Schdanow , also Wassili Shdanow , Vassili Jdanov or Vasyl Zhdanov , ( Russian Василий Иванович Жданов ; born January 12, 1963 in Salomnoye , Belgorod Oblast ) is a former Soviet cyclist and later coach.

In 1984 Vasily Zhdanov won two stages of the Tour of Britain and was third on the Tour of Greece . In 1985 , as team captain, he became road world champion in the team time trial over 100 kilometers, with Viktor Klimov , Igor Sumnikow and Alexander Zinoviev . He competed several times in the International Peace Tour and won the tenth stage in 1986 and the prologue in 1987 . In 1987 he decided one stage of the Tour of Austria for himself. He was also seven times overall Soviet champion in the disciplines of team time trial and two-team time trial. In 1988 Vasily Zhdanov was seventh at the Olympic Games in Seoul in the 100 km four-man team time trial. He drove with Asjat Saitov , Viktor Klimov and Igor Sumnikov .

In 1989, Zhdanov signed a professional contract with the Alfa Lum cycling team from San Marino ; 1991/1992 he drove for the Dutch team TVM-Sanyo . In 1990 and 1991 Vasily Zhdanov competed in the Tour de France ; he reached the finish on the Champs Élysées both times , but in back places. In 1989 he started at the Giro d'Italia , 1989 and 1991 at the Vuelta a España .

From 1994 to 1996 Zhdanov was in preparation for the Olympic Games in Atlanta coach of Ukrainian roads team. Until 2010 he was employed in the state sports administration. Since 2011 he has been working as an assistant to Giuseppe Saronni in the Lampre-ISD team and looks after its Ukrainian drivers.
