UCI Road World Championships 1985
The 1985 UCI Road World Championships were held in Giavera del Montello , Italy from August 29th to September 1st .
Racing action
The professional drivers had to cover 265.5 kilometers on the easy-to-manage world championship course, which only showed a slight ascent with the L'Angelo Piccolo. During the race, a leading group formed which included five Italians and the German driver Rolf Gölz . The world championship debutant started a breakaway attempt at kilometer 225, with which he was able to set himself apart from the other drivers for 20 kilometers. Two kilometers from the finish, the Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk managed to outrun the 14-strong top group. The other drivers obviously did not take this action by the 38-year-old seriously enough, and so he managed to pull out a lead of 100 meters shortly before the finish. This was enough to finally cross the target line three seconds before his pursuers. Rolf Gölz was the only one of eight Germans who started and finished 15th. A total of 66 drivers made it to the finish.
Among the amateurs, who had to drive 177 kilometers, a field of 188 participants started the race. 83 crossed the finish line, the fastest was 23-year-old Pole Lech Piasecki . The team time trial was won by the four-man from the Soviet Union , in the women's field, where 91 athletes took to the 73.8-kilometer World Championship course, the 25-year-old French Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli became the new world champion. For the Association of German Cyclists, six riders were among the 87 who had survived the race. Sandra Schumacher was the best German in third place.
