Maria Canins (born June 4, 1949 in Stern , Abtei ) is a former Italian cyclist , cross-country skier , mountain biker and world cycling champion.
Career
With her successes and versatility, Maria Canins is a sporting exception.
Cross-country skiing since 1969
From 1969 to 1981 she successfully cross-country skiing, so she won a. a. 15 national titles and in 1985 the first Italian to win the Swedish Vasa race . Ten times in a row, from 1979 to 1988, she won the Italian cross-country skiing marathon Marcialonga .
Professional cycling since 1981
In 1981, at the age of 32, Maria Canins decided to take up professional cycling. Since she already had a child at that time, she was called "La mammina volante" (Italian: "the flying mother"). Just a year later, she finished second at the Road World Championships in Goodwood , UK , and third the following year . In 1985 she was runner- up again , and at the 1988 Road World Championships in Seoul, she was finally world champion in the team time trial .
Her great strengths were stage tours: in 1988 she won the first edition of the Giro d'Italia Femminile ; In 1987 the Tour de l'Aude Féminin and in 1985 and 1986 the Grande Boucle Féminine (known as Tour de France Féminin ). Several times she also took second and third places in the overall ranking of tours. She has been the Italian road race champion six times, making her the record holder.
1984 Summer Olympics
At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Maria Canins was fifth in the road race; four years later at the Games in Seoul , she finished 32nd.
Winter triathlon since 1995
In 1995 Maria Canins retired from professional cycling and turned to mountain biking and the winter triathlon . In these disciplines, too, she achieved numerous successes such as winning the world title in the winter triathlon in 1997 and 1999.
For many years Maria Canins has been the representative of the Maratona dles Dolomites , one of the most important sporting events in her home region.
Maria Canins was married to the Italian cross-country skier Bruno Bonaldi until his death in July 2016 . She lives in her home in the Dolomites .
