The Elisabeth island ( slowak. Alžbetínsky ostrov ;. Ungar Erzsébet-sziget ) is a small island off the Danube Komarno .

location

The island lies on the Slovak side of the Danube , which forms the state border with Hungary here, in a west-east direction.

At the upstream end of the island it is connected to the solid shore by alluvial sand and begins just above the confluence of the small Danube into the main stream.

The island is about 2.5 km long and about 550 m wide in the middle. The connection to the mainland is only about 100 m.

In addition to the connection at the western end, there is a road bridge at the eastern end of the island, the Elisabeth Bridge , which leads from Komárno to Komárom on the Hungarian side of the Danube. The border crossing existed on the island until the Schengen expansion . Road 64 leads from Nitra to the border, which continues at road 13 in Hungary.

Name of the island

It is named after Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary , who first set foot on Hungarian soil on her first (ship) voyage on this island. Before it was called Várkormányzói-sziget (' Castle Commander Island'), Komáromi sziget ('Komorn Island'), while during the times of socialism it was called the “Red Flotilla Island” (Slovak. Ostrov Červenej flotily , ung. Vörös flottila- sziget ).

history

The citizens of the town of Komorn have been using the island to grow fruit since the Middle Ages . In the 16th century it still consisted of two islands (Big and Small Island), which were separated by a trickle. After 1526 it fell into the hands of Austrian castle captains, who viewed it as castle property and charged a fee for using the gardens. During the time of the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, the gardens were destroyed several times. In 1623 the castle captain Johann Dietrich Reiffenberg took full possession of the island and used it as a pasture for the horses of the guard. With the restoration of the rights of the city of Komorn, it came back into the possession of the city. After some time as pasture, the island was used again for orchards.

The Elisabeth Bridge , which leads to the southern Hungarian district of Komároms , was built in 1892 at the eastern end of the island, but there was no connection from Elisabeth Island to the city. It has been connected to the southern part of the city since 1986 thanks to a retractable bridge.
