Today's Autodrome is located on the site of a former military airfield of the Royal Air Force , who during the Second World War as a Royal Air Force Station Westhampnett (short RAF Westhampnett appointed). The site served as an emergency landing site for hurricane and Spitfire equipped fighter squadrons from the nearby RAF Tangmere station.

Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit

In a Formula 1 race without world championship status ( Glover Trophy ) on April 23, 1962, Stirling Moss came in fourth place from the track and hit an earth wall. He suffered broken bones and brain trauma , was in a coma and was initially paralyzed on one side. It took him over a year to recover and then retired from his career.

Over the years the racetrack has hosted numerous races. Due to the ever higher speeds, the line no longer met safety standards from 1966 onwards. Racing was therefore stopped after the last race on July 2, 1966.

During a test drive on June 2, 1970, McLaren founder Bruce McLaren had a fatal accident in a CanAm -McLaren. In the accident, the rear panel of the vehicle was torn off as a result of the high contact pressure, the car crashed into a wall at 200 km / h, Bruce McLaren was thrown out and died.

The Goodwood Revival has been held on the circuit every September since 1998 . Vehicles that started as real racing cars at the time (1948–1966) are allowed to take part. This event has a special flair, as the racetrack is still largely in its original condition and many visitors wear contemporary clothing.

The Rolls-Royce Motor Cars plant , which Goodwood is planning, is in the immediate vicinity .
