Crystal Palace Circuit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Crystal Palace Circuit is a former racing circuit in the Crystal Palace district of London . It was located on the grounds of the Crystal Palace National Sports Center .

history

The circuit opened on May 21, 1927 with a motorcycle race. The route was based on existing paths. Until the renovation in 1937, the route was 1.6 km long. During the work it was extended to 3 km. In the same year the International Imperial Trophy race took place here. This was recorded and broadcast by the BBC. This race is therefore considered a motorsport television broadcast.

During the Second World War, the circuit was taken over by the British Ministry of Defense and shortened to 2.2 km. Circuit races were not held here again until 1953 . The last race took place in 1972.

In September 2007, the prologue was held as part of the Tour of Britain cycle race on the Crystal Palace Circuit.
