Oliver's Mount is a temporary racing circuit near the town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire in the United Kingdom . The track is known for hosting road races for motorcycles and is the last pure street circuit in England .

Surroundings

Oliver's Mount rises around 180 m above sea level south of the city. In addition to a panorama over the place, it offers some recreational opportunities. There are ten soccer fields and a rugby field around Oliver's Mount . There are also designated tent and mobile home sites . At the summit there is a memorial for the victims of the two world wars. Nature offers many opportunities for hiking. There is also a traditional inn here.

Origin of name

The name of the survey goes back to Oliver Cromwell and is based on the false assumption that he stationed a battery here during the English Civil War of 1644/45 . However, Cromwell was probably never there.

history

In 1946 a motorcycle race was held on the public road at Oliver's Mount for the first time. Since then, the course has secured a permanent place in racing. To this day it has mainly been two-wheel races. In 1955 and 1956, the British Formula 3 races were also held here. The British Superbike Championship was also a guest on the course for two years (1987 and 1988).

other events

In 2012, the two-day open air music festival called Future Of Music took place at Oliver's Mount . However, this event was not continued. Unlike some smaller open airs and concerts that are held here again and again. The International Bike Week - a large motorcycle meeting - has also been held here every year since 2012 . A stage of the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire road race was held at Oliver's Mount.

Motorcycle racing

In addition to competitions in the hill climb discipline, for example , four runs have been established over the year.

  • Spring Road Races
  • Barry Sheene Classic Road Races
  • Cock o 'the North Road Races
  • The Gold Cup

These are an integral part of the street racing calendar, a form of motor sport that is particularly popular in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man and can also be practiced there due to the special legal situation. Not so in Yorkshire: the street circuit is a certain rarity, because in the United Kingdom all races on public roads were banned very early on by the Red Flag Act . This makes Oliver's Mount the only street circuit in England. Well-known representatives of the sport such as Ian Hutchinson , Guy Martin , Ryan Farquhar , Ian Lougher , John McGuinness , Chris Palmer , William Dunlop or Nick Crowe step on the course and attract thousands of fans and spectators. The organizer of the races is the local Auto 66 association . Outside of the races, there is a strict speed limit of 30  mph (around 50 km / h) on the roads.
