Awards

The title was first bestowed as Duke of Richmond and Somerset on June 18, 1525 to Henry Fitzroy , the illegitimate son of King Henry VIII and Elizabeth Blount . The title expired when he died childless on July 22, 1536.

On May 17, 1623 the title Duke of Richmond was newly created for Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox , together with the subordinate title Earl of Newcastle upon Tyne . As early as October 6, 1613, he had been awarded the titles of Earl of Richmond and Baron of Setrington , and in 1583 he had inherited the Duke of Lennox title belonging to the Peerage of Scotland from his father . When Ludovic died on February 16, 1624, all of his titles lapsed with the exception of Dukedom Lennox, which fell to his brother Esmé Stewart, Earl of March .

For Esmé's son James Stewart, 4th Duke of Lennox , the title Duke of Richmond was newly created in the third award on August 8, 1641 . His nephew, Charles Stewart , who was 3rd Duke of Richmond and 6th Duke of Lennox in 1660, was also elevated to Earl of Lichfield and Baron Stuart of Newbury on December 10, 1645 . All of his titles lapsed on his death on December 12, 1672.

The fourth and current award finally took place on August 9, 1675 to Charles Lennox , the illegitimate son of King Charles II with Louise de Kérouaille , Duchess of Portsmouth. Together with the Duketitel he was awarded the subordinate titles Earl of March and Baron Setrington . On September 9, 1675 he was also awarded the titles of Duke of Lennox , Earl of Darnley and Lord Torboltoun in the Peerage of Scotland . His descendant, the 6th Duke, was elevated to Duke of Gordon and Earl of Kinrara on January 13, 1876 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The eldest son of the respective duke carries the courtesy title Earl of March and Kinrara as the title heir ( heir apparent ) .

The Lennox family is one of the "bastard lines" of the royal house of Stuart , as are the Scott ( Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry ), FitzRoy ( Dukes of Grafton ), Beauclerk ( Dukes of St. Albans ) or the Catholic Fitz-James (Dukes ) families of Berwick, Dukes of Alba, etc.).
