On May 17, 1623 the title Duke of Richmond was newly created for Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox , together with the subordinate title Earl of Newcastle upon Tyne . As early as October 6, 1613, he had been awarded the titles of Earl of Richmond and Baron of Setrington , and in 1583 he had inherited the Duke of Lennox title belonging to the Peerage of Scotland from his father . When Ludovic died on February 16, 1624, all of his titles lapsed with the exception of Dukedom Lennox, which fell to his brother Esmé Stewart, Earl of March .
For Esmé's son James Stewart, 4th Duke of Lennox , the title Duke of Richmond was newly created in the third award on August 8, 1641 . All of his titles lapsed on his death on December 12, 1672.
The fourth and current award finally took place on August 9, 1675 to Charles Lennox , the illegitimate son of King Charles II with Louise de Kérouaille , Duchess of Portsmouth.
