Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond KG , KB , PC , FRS (born May 18, 1701 in Goodwood , † August 8, 1750 in Godalming ), was a British nobleman , general and politician.

Life

Charles was the only son of Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond , and his wife Lady Anne Brudenell.

In 1721 he joined a guard cavalry regiment of the British Army as an officer . In 1739 he was promoted to Brigadier-General , 1742 to Major-General , 1745 to Lieutenant-General and in the same year finally promoted to General . He fought in 1743 in the Battle of Dettingen and in 1745 against the Jacobites .

In 1722 he was elected to the Lower House of Parliament as MP for Chichester . When his father died in 1723, he inherited his title of nobility as 2nd Duke of Richmond and 2nd Duke of Lennox and was promoted to the House of Lords . In 1734 he inherited the French title duc d'Aubigny from his paternal grandmother, Louise de Kérouaille .

From 1724 to 1725 he was the grand master of a Masonic lodge . From 1726 to 1735 he was Lord of the Bedchamber of Kings George I and George II. At the coronation of the latter in 1727 he served as Lord High Constable . 1726 he became a Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter was added and also a Knight Companion of the newly established 1727 Order of the Bath was geschlagen.1735 Lennox Mayor of Chichester , Master of the Horse and Privy Counselor . From 1748 to 1749 he was British ambassador to France. He was a co-founder of the Foundling Hospital in London and was a great promoter of the sport of cricket .

He died in 1750 and was buried in Chichester Cathedral.

Marriage and offspring

In 1719, Charles Lennox married Lady Sarah Cadogan (1705–1751), a lady-in-waiting to Queen Caroline , daughter of William Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan , with whom he had the following children:
