Awards
First award
In the first award, the title was created in 1581 together with the subordinate title Lord Aubigny, Dalkeith, Torboltoun and Aberdour and Earl of Darnley for Esmé Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox from the House of Stuart . He had already been raised to Earl of Lennox and Lord Darnley, Aubigny and Dalkeith on March 5, 1580 . In 1567 he inherited the French title of Seigneur d ' Aubigny , created in 1423, from his father .
The 2nd Duke was awarded the titles of Earl of Richmond and Baron of Setrington on October 6, 1613 , and the titles of Duke of Richmond and Earl of Newcastle upon Tyne on May 17, 1623 . These titles expired with his death in 1624.
For the 4th Duke, the title Duke of Richmond was recreated on August 8, 1641 .
The 6th Duke was awarded the titles of Earl of Lichfield and Baron Stuart of Newbury on December 10, 1645 . In 1668 he also inherited the title Baron Clifton, created in 1608, from a cousin . When he died in 1672, all of his titles lapsed, except for the latter barony, which fell to his sister.
Second award
On September 9, 1675, the Dukedom Lennox, with the subordinate titles Earl of Darnley and Lord of Torboltoun , was rebuilt for Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond , an illegitimate son of King Charles II . A month earlier, on August 9, 1675, he had already been awarded the Dukedom Richmond with the subordinate titles Earl of March and Baron Setrington . In view of the vacant Seigneurie Aubigny since the death of the last Duke, he and his mother Louise de Kérouaille were awarded the French duo title Duc d'Aubigny in 1684 . This title was not recognized by the French Parliament and therefore expired when Louises de Kérouaille died in 1734, but was replaced by Louis XV in 1777 . restored for the heirs of Louise and finally abolished in 1790 in the course of the French Revolution - the family still carries the title (mostly as Duke of Aubigny ) to this day. The later 6th Duke was raised to Duke of Gordon and Earl of Kinrara on January 13, 1876 . He and his heirs have since held four duchy titles (including the titular Duchy of Aubigny), more than any other person in the UK .
