Baron Clifton is a hereditary British title of nobility conferred twice in the Peerage of England and once in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards and other titles

For the first time, the title Baron Clifton was created in the Peerage of England on December 1, 1376 for John de Clifton, when he was called to Parliament by Writ of Summons . When the 3rd Baron died in December 1447, the title fell in Abeyance and has been suspended since then.

On July 9, 1608, in the Peerage of England, the title of Baron Clifton , of Leighton Bromswold in the County of Huntingdon , was bestowed upon Sir Gervase Clifton by Writ of Summons .

For the husband of the 10th Baroness Clifton , John Bligh , the title Baron Clifton , of Rathmore in the County of Meath was created on September 14, 1721 in the Peerage of Ireland . He was also on March 7, 1723 Viscount Darnley and on June 29, 1725 Earl of Darnley , both in the Peerage of Ireland, raised. When his son Edward Bligh inherited the titles of both parents, the English and Irish baronies of Clifton were united. In contrast to the Irish title, the English title as Barony by writ can also be inherited in the female line, which is why on October 31, 1900, when the 7th Earl died, the English baron title fell to Elizabeth Bligh, 17th Baroness Clifton while the Irish title fell to Ivo Bligh, 8th Earl of Darnley . After both deaths, their heirs Esme Bligh, 9th Earl of Darnley, 18th Baron Clifton reunited the titles. The title is currently owned by Adam Bligh, 11th Earl of Darnley .
