James Stewart, 4th Duke of Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond KG (born April 6, 1612 in London , † March 30, 1655 ), was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .

Life

James was a son of Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox and his wife Catherine Clifton, Baroness Clifton. He followed his father in 1624 as Duke of Lennox.

He had been Privy Counselor from 1633 and four years later, following the death of his mother, he inherited the title of Baron Clifton . He held the office of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports from 1640 to 1642 and was Lord Steward of the Household from 1641. In 1645 he became President of the Council of the Prince of Wales .

In 1641 James was raised to Duke of Richmond , the title had already been bestowed on his uncle Ludovic , but lapsed again with his death. During the English Civil War , James fought on the side of the royalists . He was buried in Westminster Abbey .

In 1637 the Duke married Mary (1622–1685), daughter of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham , with whom he had two children:
