Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox
Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox (born September 29, 1574 , † February 16, 1624 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .
Life
Ludovic was a son of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox , and his wife Catherine de Balsac. He followed his father in 1583 as the Duke of Lennox . Ludovic held the offices of Lord Lieutenant of Kent , as well as Great Chamberlain and High Admiral of Scotland. He was made Baron Setringon and Earl of Richmond in 1613 . 1623 was the elevation to Duke of Richmond and Earl of Newcastle .
The Duke was instrumental in the colonization of Maine . Richmond Island, Cape Richmond and the city of Richmond in Maine are named in his honor.
He died at the age of 49 and was buried in Westminster Abbey . The title of Duke of Richmond expired with his death; the title of Duke of Lennox went to his brother Esmé .
Ludovic Stewart was married three times. His first wife was Sophia († before 1590), daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie . In his second marriage he married Jean (approx. 1573-1610), daughter of Matthew Campbell and his third marriage he concluded with Frances († 1639), daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Howard of Bindon. Despite his three marriages, he had only one child born out of wedlock , Sir John Stewart of Methven .
