history
In 1649, Christopher Lawson bought the land from the Abenaki that is now Gardiner and Richmond. Fort Richmont, named after Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox , Earl of Richmond , was built on the Kennebec River in 1719. Today the area is known as Richmond Village. The fort included a log cabin, trading post, chapel and quarters for soldiers and officers. The fort was protected by a palisade .
During a three hour siege by warriors from Norridgewock, houses in the settlement were burned down and cattle killed, but the fort was not captured. Other settlements on Kennebec, such as nearby Brunswick, were destroyed in this attack. The following year the fort was expanded and abandoned in 1724. The crew set out to pillage Norridgewock. The fort was rebuilt in 1740, attacked again in 1750 and evacuated in 1755 when the forts Shirley, Western and Halifax were built upriver.
Initially, the area, which was settled from 1725, belonged to Bowdoinham. John Plummer, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, received a land grant for the Plummer Road area in 1790 and his son built a house in 1810 which has been preserved. President Thomas Jefferson's embargo in 1807 damaged the economy, went bankrupt, and a recession ensued. The town of Richmond was organized on February 10, 1823 and named after the old fort. In addition to farms and trade, shipbuilding was booming in Richmond in the mid-19th century. Many preserved buildings in the Greek Revival style date from that time .
