Gardiner was founded in 1754 as Gardinerston Plantation . It previously belonged to Pittston .

Gardiner built a sawmill , wool mills, a potash factory and a grist mill on the Cobbossee River . More settlers reached the area and in 1803 the town of Gardiner was founded. In 1826, the first steamship on the Kennebec River reached Gardiner. The steamship trade with Boston and other large cities could be taken up. The settlement grew, Oak Grove Cemetery was completed in 1844, the first telegraphic dispatch reached Gardiner in 1850 and the first railroad in 1851. Shipbuilding and trade became other industries and in 1849 Gardiner became a city. After the connection to the Portland - Kennebec railroad in 1851, the city continued to grow and paper mills and several shoe and leather mills, together with the paper mills, ensured a solid economic base until the Second World War. Then modern industries emerged instead of the mills.

In the 21st century, downtown Gardiner changed. Small retail and services define the cityscape today.
