Hallowell is a city in Kennebec County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 lived there 2381 inhabitants in 1193 households on an area of 15.77 km². Hallowell is part of the Micropolitan Statistical Area Augusta - Waterville .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Hallowell has a total area of 15.77 km², of which 15.23 km² is land and 0.54 km² is made up of water .
Geographical location
Hallowell is located on the Kennebec River , in the south of Kennebec County. The Kennebec River forms the eastern boundary of the city. There are several smaller lakes in the city, the largest being Cascade Pond , which is traversed by Vaughn Brook in an easterly direction. The Vaughn Brook flows into the Kennebec River. The surface of the city is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
The place is named after Benjamin Hallowell, a Boston merchant and owner of the land that had originally been owned by the Plymouth Company since the 1620s . The area originally included the areas of today's Augusta , Chelsea and parts of Manchester . From 1797 the parts gradually became independent; Hallowell was organized as a city in 1852. In 1880 the place had 3,154 inhabitants. Hallowell was part of Massachusetts until 1820 .

Culture and sights
theatre
Founded in 1937, the Gaslight Theater is the oldest amateur theater in Maine. "Old Hallowell Day" has been celebrated annually in the city since 1968.

Economy and Infrastructure

Hallowell lies between Interstate 95 and the Kennebec River , the Brunswick – Skowhegan railway runs through the town. The US Highway 201 runs along the shore of Kennebec Rivers.
Public facilities
There are no medical facilities or hospitals in Hallowell. The closest are in Augusta and Gardiner.
In Hallowell, the Hubbard Free Library is in one of the oldest library buildings in Maine, which still serves its original function. It was inaugurated as the Hallowell Social Library in March 1880. A donation in 1893 from Thomas H. Hubbard enabled an extension to be built and it was renamed the Hubbard Free Library. It was expanded again in 1897.

Hallowell is part of Regional School Unit 2 together with Dresden, Farmingdale, Monmouth and Richmond.
Hallowell and Farmingdale have three schools:
