history
Chelsea was organized as an independent town on March 1, 1851. Previously, Chelsea was part of Hallowell. In 1855, Chelsea gave land to Pittston. Chelsea was named after Chelsea in Massachusetts.
The United States' first hospital for veterans is located in Toguz, an area of Chelsea. It is operated by the United States Department of War Veterans . In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed a treaty creating asylum for wounded or disabled soldiers in the Civil War . The first house, which was used was the former hotel property Toguz Springs Hotel , which previously belonged to the entrepreneurs Horace Beals. He planned to build a bathing resort on the site. The basis should be the mineral water source. He built a hotel, stables, leisure facilities and a bathhouse, a race track and driveways. The resort opened in 1859, but the Civil War did not flourish, and in 1863 it closed. Beals died shortly after the bankruptcy and the government bought the property. From these early beginnings, the site developed into a medical facility with care and rehabilitation facilities for veterans of the US armed forces.
Affiliated is the Toguz National Cemetery , a cemetery that is no longer in use today and where 5,373 soldiers are buried. He is also overseen by the United States Department of War Veterans.
