Mount Vernon is a town in Kennebec County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1640 inhabitants in 693 households on an area of 112.46 km².

Geographical location
Mount Vernon is to the west of Kennebec County and to the west the area of the town is bordered by Franklin County . The Long Pond borders in the east and the Flying Pond , Parker Pond and Echo Lake extend north-south in the west . There are other smaller lakes in the area of the town. The surface is hilly, the highest point is the 395 m high McGaffey Mountain .

history
Settlement of Mount Vernon began in 1774. The area was initially named Washington Plantation . Mount Vernon was organized as a town on June 28, 1792. In 1802, land was added that previously belonged to Fayette and to the Plantation of Goshen, now the Town of Vienna. Additional areas that were previously part of Rome were added in 1818. Land was given to Readfield in 1825 and 1845. Further areas of Vienna were added in 1826 and 1853, of Readfield im Fahr in 1845 and of Belgrade in 1846.
