history

Fort Halifax was the first fortification built in 1754 as an outpost at the confluence of the Sebasticook and the Kennebec River by order of Governor William Shirley . Settlement started slowly, initially near the fort. The area was part of the Kennebec Purchase from Governor Bradford's Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts. The town was organized independently on April 26, 1771. It was named after General John Winslow, who was in command of Fort Halifax. Previously the area was called Ticonic .

Land was given to Waterville in 1802 and to Fairfax in 1810. In 1813, land was given to Harlem, which was later given to China.
