Pittston was settled as early as the 17th century. The first settler to settle in the area was killed by Indians in 1676 and his house was burned down. In 1716, as an agent of the Kennebec owners, Noyes built a fort near Nahumkeag Island, which was also burned down by the Indians. The area was divided up in 1751 by Captain John North and Abram Wyman. On February 4, 1779, the area that previously formed the Gardinerston Plantation was organized as Town Pittston. The town was named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham . Until 1804 Gardiner and West Gardiner belonged to the area of ​​the town.
