Litchfield is the southernmost town in Kennebec County and is bordered by Sagadahoc County to the southeast and Androscoggin County to the southwest . history

Litchfield was first organized as Smithfield Plantation in 1793. The name goes back to two brothers named Smith, who were among the first settlers in the area. The early settlers received the land grant from the Plymouth Company. As a town, Litchfield was organized on February 18, 1798 under the name Litchfield.

In 1811 part of the area was given to Lincoln County. Bowdoinham in 1817, Wales in 1827 and 1856, West Gardiner in 1856 and Webster, now Sabattus, in 1867.

Litchfield Academy was founded as a private school in the Congregational Meetinghouse in 1840. With a grant from the state of Maine in 1849, the academy built its own school building, which has been preserved to this day. After the number of students decreased, the school was closed in 1960. Today it serves as a community center.

Litchfield is home to deposits of the rare mineral cancrinite .
