Oramandal Smith

Oramandal Smith (* 2. December 1832 in Aroostook County , † 21st May 1915 , Litchfield , Maine) was an American teacher and politician , who from 1885 to 1892 Secretary of State of Maine to 1906 and from 1901 Maine State Treasurer was .

Life

Oramandal Smith was born to Daniel Day Smith and Lucy Williams Smith. He attended the public schools in Masardis . After his mother died, his father gave him to the George Sawyer family, from where he could go to school. His father passed away while he was living there. His uncle, Prof. Samuel K. Smith of Colby University , traveled to Masardis in his carriage and in a 12-day trip brought Oramandal Smith to Litchfield. William Cleave Smith, another uncle, took him into his family. He attended the Litchfield Liberal Institute , the Litchfield Academy, and the Waterville Classical Institute

After his training, Smith was principal of schools in Litchfield and Richmond from 1864 to 1877. Smith also worked as a farmer and took up his first political office as a member of the Republican Party in 1870 when he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives. In 1874 he was named Assistant Clerk and in 1876 he was named Clerk. He held this office until 1878 and again from 1880 to 1885. He was also appointed Maine State Insurance Commissioner during his second tenure as a clerk . He held this position from 1883 to 1885.

From 1885 to 1892 he was Secretary of the State of Maine. He then served for a long time on the Governor's Council of Maine. During that time, through 1902, he worked for three Maine governors, Edwin C. Burleigh , Henry B. Cleaves, and Llewellyn Powers . In 1901, Smith was elected Maine State Treasurer. He held this office until 1906.

Smith was an advocate for Litchfield Town, chairing the Executive Committee of Litchfield Academy for 25 years, and serving as the curator of the Maine School for the Feeble Minded .

Smith married Jennie Smith in 1875. He died in Litchfield on May 21, 1915.
