Nicholas Fessenden

Nicholas Fessenden (born November 23, 1847 in Saco , Maine , † December 18, 1927 in Fort Fairfield , Maine) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1891 to 1896 .

Life

Nicholas Fessenden was born to Hewett Chandler Fessenden (1819-1885) and Mary Turner Peterson (1820-1912) in Saco, Maine. He came from an influential family. His uncle was Congressman and Senator William P. Fessenden .

Fessenden attended Bowdoin College and graduated there in 1868. He studied law in the firm of John H. French and was admitted to the bar in 1868. He served as a probate judge in Aroostook County for several years .

As a member of the Republican Party , he was Secretary of State of Maine from 1891 to 1896 . Fessenden was selectmen and overseers of poor at Fort Fairfield for several years , as well as a town clerk.

Fessenden was a Freemason and belonged to the Odd Fellows .

He married Laura Emily Stirling (1852–1876). The couple had two sons. Stirling Fessenden also a lawyer, later chairman of the Shanghai International Settlement and Reverent Thomas Whittemore Fessenden. Nicholas Fessenden died on December 18, 1927 in Fort Fairfield, Maine.
