Philip C. Johnson

Philip Carrigan Johnson (born March 11, 1795 - August 10, 1859 in Washington, DC ) was an American businessman and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1840 and from 1842 to 1844 .

Life

Philip C. Johnson was born to Jonathan Johnson and Rhoda Abbott.

After Johnson had lived with his family in Lovell , Maine, where their son Eastman Johnson was born, the family moved to Augusta . There he held various offices as a member of the Democratic Party . He was Secretary of State of Maine in 1840 and from 1842 to 1844.

He was appointed Chief Clerk to the Bureau of Construction, Equipment, and Repair of the Navy Department by President James K. Polk and lived a few blocks from the White House and the Navy Department.

Johnson married Mary Kimball Chandler (1796–1855). The couple had eight children. Her youngest son was the painter Eastman Johnson .

Philip C. Johnson died in Washington, DC on August 10, 1859. His grave is in Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, DC
