Caleb Ayer

Caleb Ayer (born 1813 in Newfield , Maine , † October 5, 1883 in Cornish , Maine) was an American lawyer and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine in 1856 .

Life

Caleb R. Ayer was born in Newfield, the son of James Ayer. His grandfather was one of the original Newfield settlers who owned a grand when Newfield was organized as the Washington Plantation . Ayer graduated from Dartmouth College in 1834 . He then completed his training as a lawyer in the legal practice of his brother-in-law Nathan Clifford . Ayer was admitted to the bar in 1838 and then worked in a law association with his brother-in-law Clifford until 1841.

In 1841 he moved back to Cornish. From 1847 to 1848 served as a member of the Democratic Party Senator in the Maine Senate and in 1848 also served as President of the Senate. In 1856 he was Secretary of State of Maine. From 1868 to 1870 he was the County Attorney of York County .

Ayer married Harriet Towle (1812–1841). He had a daughter with her. In his second marriage he was married to Mary Anne Barker (1826-1895). The couple had two other daughters.

Caleb Ayer died on October 5, 1883 at his Cornish home. That house, the Caleb R. Ayer House , is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in York County.
