Joseph T. Edgar

Joseph T. Edgar (born April 1, 1910 - November 27, 1990 in Bar Harbor , Maine ) was an American businessman and politician who was Secretary of State of Maine from 1967 to 1974 .

Life

Joseph Tappen Edgar was born on April 1, 1910. Edgar attended Newark Academy and Princeton University . He graduated in 1932.

Edgar was a member of the Republican Party , President of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions Club. He successfully campaigned for the establishment of a ferry service between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. In 1954 he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives and was Speaker of the House from 1957 to 1960 and a member of the Maine House of Representatives until 1961. He resigned when he was named Deputy Secretary of State of Maine in 1961. From 1967 to 1974 he was Secretary of State of Maine.

Edgar owned a children's clothing store in Bar Harbor and was married to Margaret Sanford. He died on November 27, 1990. The couple had one daughter. His grave is in the Ancient Cemetery, Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts .
