Bar Harbor is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 5235 inhabitants in 2427 households on an area of 163.45 km².

Geographical location
Bar Harbor is located on Mount Desert Island in Penobscot Bay off the coast of Maine in the Atlantic Ocean , in the center of southern Hancock County. It occupies the northeastern part of the island. The largest lake in the town is Eagle Lake . The surface is hilly and the highest point is Cadillac Mountain , which is 465 m high . A large part of the area is taken up by Acadia National Park.

history
The island of Mount Desert and other areas gave Louis XIV to Antoine de la Motte Cadillac in 1688 . Laumet was an officer in his service, later governor of Louisiana.
Bar Harbor was founded on February 23, 1769. Initially under the name Eden . on March 5, 1918, the area was renamed Bar Harbor . Bar Harbor was a popular vacation spot in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wealthy American families like the Rockefeller and the Astor owned vacation homes in Bar Harbor. The social work pioneer Jane Addams also stayed here quite often. In 1947 a fire destroyed large parts of the city, including the villas of these families.
Since 1998 the ferry company Bay Ferries Limited operated a connection from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth , Nova Scotia . Before it was discontinued in 2009, the high-speed catamaran The Cat covered the route in two and a half hours in normal weather conditions.
Bar Harbor is also home to the Jackson Laboratory , one of the world's leading institutes for research into human diseases using the house mouse as a model organism.
Bar Harbor is home to the College of the Atlantic , a private liberal arts college .

Economy and Infrastructure

Maine State Route 3 leads over a dam to Mount Desert Island and to Bar Harbor. The road runs along the coast to the north and east. The Maine State Route 102 branches off from it shortly after the dam towards the south and the Maine State Route 233 runs north of Eagel Lake from Village Bar Harbor to the southeast.

There are several medical facilities and hospitals in Bar Harbor.
The Jesup Memorial Library is located in a Grade II listed building on Desert Street in Bar Harbor.

The Bar Harbor School Department is responsible for school education in Bar Harbor, and Bar Harbor is also part of the Mt Desert CSD . and with Bass Harbor, Cranberry Isles, Deer Isle, Frenchboro, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Swan's Island and Trenton to the Mount Desert Island Regional School System - AOS 91 .

Remarks
The fictional location Far Harbor from the Far Harbor DLC of the computer game Fallout 4 is based on Bar Harbor. Among other things, the old port was modeled. The fictional location is also located in an area modeled on the real Mount Desert Island at a location similar to its real model.
