Surry is located on Union River Bay in the Atlantic Ocean , in the center of southern Hancock County. The area of ​​the Town is bordered by Toddy Pond to the west and Lower Pattern Pond to the north . In the south, the town ends in a headland that protrudes into the Mount Desert Narrows . history

Surry was one of six parishes whose grant was given by Kings William and Mary II to David Marsh and 350 other citizens of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The land allocation was upheld by the Massachusetts court in 1764.

Initially, the area was named Township No. 6 East of Penobscot River (T6 EPR), also Township No. 6, West of the Union River or Pattensborough. The other five townships were Township No. 1 West of Union River , Township No. 2 Orland East of Penobscot River , Plantation No. 3 Penobscot (Castine) , Plantation No. 4 Sedgwick and Plantation No. 5 Blue Hill .

The Town Surry was organized on June 21, 1803. In 1829 land was given to Ellsworth and in 1843 and 1845 Surry got lands from Penobscot.

Surry was an agricultural community that made a living from agriculture and forestry, but was also known for shipbuilding. Granite was also mined. First settled by French settlers near Newburry Neck, English settlers followed Marsh's grant.
