history

Settlement in the Great Pond area began with Joshua Williams, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and his family, in 1805. On October 26, 1840, the area designated Township No. 33 Middle Division, Bingham's Penobscot Purchase (T33 MD BPP) , organized to give residents the right to vote. This was confirmed on March 5, 1895. The name was changed to Great Pond Plantation in 1969 and on April 1, 1981 the area was organized as a Town.
