Otis was settled from 1805. The area was organized as a town on March 19, 1835. The name Otis came from one of the landowners, Joseph Otis. Otis became the 227th town in Maine. The area was previously known as Township T8 or Township No. 8 East of Penobscot River, Livermore Survey (T8 EPR LS) . The area of ​​today's town of Dedham also belonged to township T8.

Over the years there have been 8 sawmills in Otis, while Otis' heyday had 5 at the same time. These plants produced shingles and staves. There was also a tire maker who made tires for barrels and several shops. Otis was divided into 2 school districts and there were 3 schools. Today the Beach Hill School is located in Otis.
