Dedham initially belonged to Township No. 8. As early as 1835, the town of Otis was organized as an independent town from this area and in 1837 Dedham was organized as an independent town. The name came from Dedham in Massachusetts . The town gave land to Brewer in 1841 and land to Ellsworth in 1852, and Bucksport added land in 1909.

The settlement of Dedham started in 1810. Dedham is on the carriage route from Bangor to Ellsworth, which now forms US Highway 1A. The Lake House, better known as the Lucerne Inn , established itself as a place to stay , which was placed under a preservation order and entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

On April 11, 1961, a McDonnell F-101 Voodoo crashed on Bald Mountain.
