Aurora is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 114 people lived there in 46 households on an area of 101.66 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Aurora has a total area of 101.66 km², of which 97.54 km² is land and 4.12 km² is water .
Geographical location
Aurora is centrally located in Hancock County. A branch of the Union River flows south through the town. There are several lakes in the area of Aurora, the Long Pond to the north, east to Half Mile Pond and the Upper Middle Branch Pond and the Lower Middle Branch Pond and southwest to Giles Pond . The surface is hilly and the highest point is the 262 m high Spruce Mountain .

In Aurora there are two geological features created by glaciers, the Silsby Plaine and The Whale Back .
Silsby Plaine is a geological delta, here the currents that were created by the melting of the glacier flowed into a body of water. The bottom of the plain is sandy to a depth of 7.6 m, these conditions are ideal for blueberries . The next 6 m consists of till , a mixture of clay, gravel, sand, silt and rubble.
The ridge The Whale Back is an approximately 23 m high esker that rises above a wetland and the channel for a branch of the Union River. Route 9 leads over its ridge.

history
Aurora was named Plantation No. 27 organized in 1822. Previously the area was called Township of T27 MD, BPP or Township No. 27 Middle Division, Bingham's Penobscot Purchase (T27 MD BPP) or Richards . The organization as a town took place on February 1, 1831, initially under the name Hampton . The name was changed to Aurora in 1833.

In Aurora, the Brick School House was placed under a preservation order and in 1980 under the register no. 80000221 inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
