The first exploration by Europeans took place in 1604 by Samuel de Champlain . The island was used by Indians as a summer resort at the time. First early settlers were captured in an Indian attack and sold into slavery in Canada in 1750. Colonel James Swan of Massachusetts, a patriot and contributor to the Boston Tea Party , bought the island in 1786 to establish a settlement there. This did not happen because he was captured on a trip to France and spent twenty years in prison there. He died shortly after his release. David Smith was the first white settler to settle on Swans Island in 1791. He had 24 children and was buried on Swans Island after his death in 1840. Many of today's residents can be traced back to David Smith.

Initially, the island of Swans Island with other neighboring islands was organized as Swan's Island Plantation. Then on March 26, 1897 as Town Swans Island. In 1901 the islands of Calf and West Black Island were added to the town.
