Deer Isle is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 1975 inhabitants in 929 households on an area of 320.30 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Deer Isle has a total area of 320.30 km², of which 76.97 km² is land and 243.33 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Deer Isle is located in the south of Hancock County on several islands in the Atlantic Ocean . To the east in Jericho Bay , to the west in Penobscot Bay . In the area of Town there are several smaller lakes such as Torrey Pond of the Lily Pond and Mill Pond . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.
More famous islands include: Campbell Island, Carney Island, Conary Island, Deer Isle, Freese Island, Little Deer Isle, Sheepshead Island, Stave Island, and White Island .
Most of the islands to the west of the town are Unorganized Territories and are administered by the State of Maine. These islands include: Pickering Island, Great Spruce Head Island, Little Spruce Head Island, Butter Island, Eagle Island, Bradbury Island, Hog Island, and Pond Island .

history
As early as 1605, George Weymouth was the first European to enter the area. Deer Isle was organized as a Town on February 2, 1789, previously known as Deer Island Plantation. It was the fourth organized town in Hancock County. The name was derived from the deer living there in the forests. Settlement started in 1762 and the first settler was William Eaton.
In 1874 land was given to the town of Isle au Haut and in 1897 to the town of Stonington.

Deer Isle is connected to the mainland by the Deer Isle Bridge . Maine State Route 15 also runs over the bridge .

Deer Isle belongs to School Union 76 with Brooklin, Sedgwick and Stonington and to Mount Desert Island Regional School System - AOS 91 with Bar Harbor, Bass Harbor, Cranberry Isles, Frenchboro, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Stonington, Swan's Island and Trenton .
