Geographical location
The town of Vinalhaven comprises several islands in the Penobscot Bay of the Atlantic Ocean . The larger and better known islands include: Greens Island , Hurricane Island , Leadbetter Island , Penobscot Island and Vinalhaven Island . There are several lakes on the island of Vinalhaven , such as Carvers Pond . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
The town of Vinalhaven is located on several islands in Penobscot Bay. The island was used as a stopover for travelers early on. The island was initially named South Fox Island after the resident silver-gray foxes. The first permanent settlement developed in 1765. During the American Revolution , many of the island's residents fled from plundering British soldiers. They returned after the war and 72 settlers bought the island from the State of Massachusetts for £ 246.
There are several harbors on Vinalhaven, the largest, Carvers Harbor, is in the south of Vinalhaven. The town of Vinalhaven was organized on June 25, 1789. Vinalhaven was named after John Vinal, a lawyer from Boston who helped the residents acquire the land.
The northern part of Vinalhaven, North Fox Island , was split off from Vinalhaven in 1846 and organized as an independent Town North Haven. Hurricane Isle was split off in 1878 and organized as an independent town. This was revoked in 1921 and Hurricane Isle was incorporated into Vinalhaven in 1937.
