The islands that belong to Criehaven formed the Criehaven Plantation from 1896, with its own school and post office, which, however, returned its organization in 1925 because it was too much effort for the few residents to maintain the structures. history

Criehaven was named after Robert Crie. Crie came from Matincus Isle and bought the island in 1848 at the age of 19, on which he built a log cabin and later a homestead for himself and his wife Harriet Hall from Camden . Crie was a farmer, keeping 110 sheep on the island in 1880 and producing over 12 tons of hay. A small settlement emerged with several houses and shipyards that were supposed to secure the livelihood of the residents. There was little agriculture on the island, the inhabitants lived mainly from fishing. Today the island is only inhabited in summer, only one inhabitant lives on the island for the entire year.

Crie built packing houses for salt cod, which he shipped to Boston. He housed the packers in the buildings above the packaging floors. Crie organized the settlement as a plantation, he founded a shop and a school, opened a ferry service, a post office and had appointed a constable to ensure law and order. He administered the island like a feudal lord , decided who could buy property and was known on the island as King Crie . After his death, the settlement flourished for a while, but storms, fires and other problems led to the dissolution of the organization as a Plantation in 1925 after 29 years. Since then, Criehaven has been under the authority of the Land Use Planning Commission .
