Friendship is a town in Knox County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1152 inhabitants in 508 households on an area of 81.25 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Friendship has a total area of 81.25 km², of which 36.52 km² is land and 44.73 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Friendship is located in the southwest of Knox County, on Muscongus Bay in the Atlantic Ocean . It borders Lincoln County . There are several small lakes in the town's area. The largest is Forrest Pond . Several islands also belong to the area of the town. The best known are Cranberry Island , Friendship Long Island , Harbor Island , Morse Island, and Otter Island . The surface of the area is slightly hilly, with no significant elevations.

history
The area of Friendship belonged to the Muscongus later Waldo patent . The Indian name for the area was Meduncook for sandy harbor . European settlement began around 1750 when a garrison was built on an island in the southern part, which is connected to the mainland when the tide is low. The first residents settled near this fortification.
Friendship was organized as a town on February 25, 1807. Previously it was organized as a Meduncook Plantation in 1772 . Crotch Island was added to the town by Cushing in 1834, further parts of Chushing were added in 1839 and Six Island in 1867.
The Friendship Sloop , a type of boat, was developed in Friendship around 1880.
