The area of ​​Friendship belonged to the Muscongus later Waldo patent . The Indian name for the area was Meduncook for sandy harbor . European settlement began around 1750 when a garrison was built on an island in the southern part, which is connected to the mainland when the tide is low. The first residents settled near this fortification.

Friendship was organized as a town on February 25, 1807. Previously it was organized as a Meduncook Plantation in 1772 . Crotch Island was added to the town by Cushing in 1834, further parts of Chushing were added in 1839 and Six Island in 1867.

The Friendship Sloop , a type of boat, was developed in Friendship around 1880.
