history

The area around Owls Head got its name from sailors who, in 1759, compared the headland of Owls Head, which protrudes far into Penobscot Bay, to the stature of an owl.

The Town Owls Head was organized as an independent town on July 9, 1921. Previously, the Owls Head area belonged to the Town of South Thomaston. The reason for the separation from South Thomaston was the dissatisfaction of the residents with the condition of their five small one-room schools. The town had its first town assembly on August 29, 1921 at Owls Head School.

Museums

The Transportation Museum Maine is located in Owls Head. The collection of the museum, founded in 1974, includes more than 150 historic automobiles, planes, motorcycles and bicycles.

Buildings

In Owls Head, the Owls Head Light Station was placed under monument protection in 1978 and under the register no. 78000183 inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Parks
