history

The first European settlers arrived in the Hope area in the 1780s. The settlement was promoted by Charles Barrett, who received a patent from the Plymouth Council in 1785 in which he undertook to settle 45 settlers within 3 years. For this he should get half the area of the area. The first settlers he recruited reached the area in 1786.

The fact that Hope was not organized as Town until 1804 was due to the blockade of the original land speculators, who had received the grant for Hope, but had only sold a small part of their shares. They did not want to pay taxes for the construction of the school, cemetery and other infrastructure. On June 23, 1804, however, the organization took place as a town and Barrettstown Plantation became the Town Hope. Land was given to the neighboring town of Appleton in 1843. About a third of the area and the part that was most economical split off.
